Industrial filtration applications of water in a power generation facility In a non-renewable electricity generation plant water there are many different currents each claiming their own specific level of purity of water. The presence, flow and purity of each of these flows is driven by the design of the plant, for example, coal, combined cycle gas turbines, geo-thermal or nuclear.
These may include: – Pre-treatment of wells, surface water or city – Boiler Water Makeup – Cooling tower – Water Service – Flue gas desulfurization – Ash – Coal pile runoff – Gas turbine inlet air cooling / misting – Elimination of waste water.
Whatever the application, is a good chance that any leakage of water is required so that the implementation of power generation to operate at peak efficiency.
Definition of the types of water filtration Water Filtering options in the power generation industry can be divided into two main categories based on the filter media used
– Granular and – Membrane.
granular water filtration has been used for many decades in the industry power generation, and will be familiar to most. Examples of granular media filtration include sand filters, activated carbon filters for taste, odor and chlorine removal, filters of anthracite and garnet fine filters.
These types of filters can remove suspended particles down to about 10 microns in diameter. With the use of certain coagulant or flocculant polymer fed before these filters (fed as filter aids), some success has been in removing particles down to about 1 micron.
The distance between the discrete filter media particles serve as pores. Suspended solids trapped by these filters will be collected at the top of the bed of filtration media, or within the pores.
The membrane water filtration membranes used to remove suspended particles. Unlike granular filters, membranes with pores are designed and are able to remove particles much smaller. The final membrane filtration is reverse osmosis (RO), where the dissolved solids (metal ions) be removed. This is not really a filtering mechanism in the true sense of words, such as semipermeable membranes used in RO did not have pores. It is rather considered as a mechanism of demineralization.
Membrane filtration of water is best defined by the range of filterable particle size, as follows:
1. Microfiltration (MF) – can include deep tissue or a wound type cartridge filters, membrane filters or truth. You can remove particles of about 0.1 microns to more than 1 micron.
2. Ultrafiltration (UF) – can remove particles of less than 0.01 microns to more than 0.1 microns. You can remove some large molecular weight dissolved organic matter.
3. Nanofiltration (NF) – you can remove particles below 0.001 microns and 0.01 microns. It can be removed the lower molecular weight organic.
4. RO – can remove particles from 0.0001 to 0.001 microns microns. You can also remove the dissolved ionic solids.
